Planning a visit
A few practical points will make a trip easier. Check current rules and prices before you travel, as they change.
When to go
- July and August: hot, busy and the most expensive on the coast.
- May, June and September: warm, with fewer crowds and a good chance of swimming weather.
- Winter: quiet on the coast, but Zagreb has its Advent season.
Getting there and around
Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik and Zadar have airports. Buses link most towns. A car helps for Istria and inland areas, and ferries are needed for the islands, so book ahead in summer, especially if you are taking a car.
Money and language
Croatia uses the euro. The language is Croatian, and English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
Tips
- Book rooms early for July and August.
- Visit popular old towns early in the morning to avoid crowds.
- Wear shoes you can walk in on stone streets, and sea shoes for rocky beaches.
- Follow the rules in national parks.
- Stay on marked paths in the countryside.
Emergencies
The European emergency number 112 works in Croatia.
